Most of these paintings are studies that seek to understand the effect of different approaches to the same subject matter. These range from gradual simplification and small modifications of the compositions, to making every effort to create identical paintings using different color mixing techniques.  Sometimes it was the subtlest changes between paintings that created the most dramatically different results.
